The annual Lords v Commons
match was held at the prestigious Crockfords Club on Friday 25th
February with the series tantalisingly tied at 15-15.
The line-ups were as follows: |
House of Commons
|
House of Lords
|
Michael Mates (capt) |
Lord Skelmsdale (capt) |
Dr Evan Harris |
Lord Baker |
Crispin Blunt |
Lady Billingham |
Dr John Marek |
Lord Brougham |
Tony McWalter |
Earl Caithness |
Sir Tim Sainsbury |
Lord Harrison |
Robin Squire |
Lady Howe |
Dr Alan Whitehouse |
Lord Stamp |
The match was played over
24 boards, divided into 4 6-board sessions with every pair facing
every opposing pair. The first 6 boards went heavily in favour of
the Lords but the Commons pulled most of it back by the lunch interval
where an excellent meal was laid out. Another good set from the
Commons after the break put them in a commanding position and the
late rally from the Lords wasn't quite enough to make up the deficit
so the Commons took the Jack Perry Trophy in a close contest by
580 aggregate points.

The Alan Berry Trophy
for the best played hand went to Lady Howe, playing for the Lords.
Holding just three points in her hand she bid up to 4H and brought
it home with some solid play. |
